new scientists

Dear Blog, (mcm klakar la plak)

i so love this magazine.. i started reading it at the doctors, while waiting for my turn..

Sometime this week, i read an article bout the 10 mysteries of human beings…

1. Blushing: experts still dont know why our body reacts in such a way that our emotions become the obvious.. usually happens when we are shy or embarrassed.  logically, our conscious mind resents this uncontrollable reaction just because..

2. Laughter: its contagious for sure.  a research team studied when people would laugh most, either at a normal remark OR a really really very funny joke.. Most people reacted with more spark to the former rather than the latter.. a normal remark eg: imagine if there were toilets in the lifts..Also, researchers say that males are more prone to being funny, while females prefer to hear jokes.

3. Teenage life: All other creatures jump from their childhood to adulthood unlike us humans.  This teenage period is a transition zone where hormones start taking charge affecting the mind and physique.  The teenage life provides a space where young adults get to learn how to ‘mate’ a.k.a. flirt without posing a threat to the real adults.

4. Pubic hair: perhaps i shall not elaborate on this?

5. Nose-picking: most school children admit to having the habit of nose-picking.  I do it to keep the tunnels clear..=)

6. Kissing: Lips of a human has much more senses than other areas of the body.  So, it gives a sensual and satisfactory feeling; according to the magazine of course..

7. dreaming: still a mystery.. though it was said that dreams help us remember events and allow the emotions associated to slide by.  so, we get emotionally detached from most memories?

8. altruism: this is about how we do something for someone, and we sort of have our hidden agenda behind.  (x ikhlas??).. according to the magazine, we offer help to others so that we ourselves move up the hierarchy by knowing that the relationship built will somehow will benefit oneself in the future.. personally, i disagree coz i do believe in keikhlasan..=)

i cant recall the other 9 & 10..

Thats all for now folks!! this magazine will probably never fail to intrigue  me.. especially with the physchological related articles..

Yours truly,

Mariah..

ps: i dont quite understand signing your own blog.. this is my first, for no particular reason. =)

thanks papa!!

when i was a kid, my dad just loved buying books for his children. He would buy educational books ever so often… he even bought one or two huge and thick textbooks on algebra alone-and that was when and that was when the four of us were between 11-17 yrs of age.. we literally could open a small library if not for the constant ‘charity’ my mom did-giving away the books to schools… i remember he kept on telling me to read this one book, about spelling and pronunciation.. however, reading was never my interest.. and so, my dad quite often, highlighted the things he wanted me to learn verbally.. i still remember he would emphasize the difference when saying ’sheep’ and ’ship’… and i am so fortunate that he did that… =)

Another story..

when we were kids, my dad would drive us to school every morning.. all 4 of us in his antique ancient Mercedes..It was pretty cool.. It had a yellowish bulky body (i think it was originally white), and there were small yet visible holes under the clutch.  made me look at what we were going over…

back to the story; we lived bout 25 minutes from our school, so he had us as his captured audience..literally… he would sing and talk to us bout things that he thought mattered.. including our math tables!!!! when i was in standard 1 and my brother amzaid in standard 3, my dad tested my brother’s math skills..

dad: 7×7; zaid would reply 49

dad: 5×4; zaid:20

dad: 4×8; zaid:36

dad: wrong!;  zaid: if u know the answer, why ask me??!!

Happy Father’s Day Papa.=)

9 am

Once when i was writing out one of my may reports, I included the time allowed to water plants in the Adelaide Botanical Gardens based on the restriction of water according to the law.  i wrote: from 8 pm to 9 am.  Then i noticed Microsoft Words was underlining the word ‘am‘ in red, as if i made a grammatical mistake.  to satisfy my curiosity, i right clicked the word, and guess what Microsoft suggested: ‘is’… apakah?!

Ramadhan, please come in

This is something i got from somebody which i think is worth reading.  hope this would come true, having a blessed Ramadhan.

A Brand New YOU

Childhoods, personal backgrounds, financial situations, locations, surroundings and a more than twenty-year-old past consciously influence our individual evolutions that make us who we are today and who we will be tomorrow. They influence us in different degrees at different times. By simply being alive, every one of us is a constant target of all these forces and we choose to submit to or resist their influence. Sometimes we have long battles with the negativity they throw at us, sometimes we win, but many times we just give in.

We let ourselves be victims of circumstances and lose out on the opportunities of growth they bring. We cling on to a bad past and lose the chance of making a great future. We let ourselves be ruled by our surroundings and become another nameless face in an aimless crowd. We crave the money that causes the richest to kill themselves. We let our beauty and personal worth be defined by self-indulgent materialists and find faults in our breathtaking creation. We burn money into ashes of cigarettes that only char our lungs and suffocate our minds. We live trying to please a society that will not stop demanding from us till we surrender our mind, body and soul to it and lose our own selves.

You crave for a day when you can wake up feeling great and do something productive, you’ve always wanted to feel the peace of a beautiful Fajr prayer, you want to do the hijab whose benefits you’ve long admired, you want to end your addiction to smoking and breathe again, you want to lose weight and get your health back, you want to taste the sweetness of faith, you want to explore, learn and be enlightened, you want to aspire and contribute to your world, you want to forgive, let go and overcome, you want to love and be loved, you want to be alive and not merely awake.

So give glad tidings the month of Ramadan!

Embrace this beautiful season of change and bid your old self goodbye. Ramadan gives us the chance to remove the shadows of our pasts, shed our old habits and discard our mindsets that have always limited us. By fasting and abstaining mentally, spiritually and physically from our desires and weaknesses, Ramadan brings out the goodness in us and shines it to the world. And every one of us has felt this wonderful change during Ramadan.

Choose to spend this Ramadan well. And in 30 days it will leave you with its most wonderful gift… a brand new you.

copy and paste

i find my dad super cool at times… yesterday when i was complaining about my uni workload + other obligations to him, he replied, “u only hv a few more months to go, then u’ll be free”…. i emphasized the ‘uni workload’, explaining the many reports i need to write for the so few subjects i have…. he replied, “just copy and paste”..

are you kidding??!!!! that is plagiarism… but i thot that my dad was cool enough to propose such an act…

The true purpose

Known to men, Happiness is something to be cherished.  THe question is, what is true happiness.

Everyone works.. EVERYONE.. One kind smarter than the other.. The smart one works for the hereafter benefiting heaps more than the one who works for the life on earth..

TIME

time is something that i always need.

when wounded to heal, when stressed to unravel, when alone to seek purpose..  often, 24 hours a day is not enough. or is it?  in the past, others grasp glory with the mere 24 hours a day making history.   why cant i?

someone told me once before, that life is like a business.. we have the power to make profit or loose it all..  it all depends on how we play the game.. If time is a buffer (which in everybody’s case it is), we should maximize our efforts plus using our time brilliantly to gain as much as we can for the future..

precious and limited; TIME

over-reacting

it has been a long while since i last wrote.. a really long while in fact..

i sort of miss writing.. there were many things on my mind in the past few months worthy of making it to the page of my blog, however failed due to a few reasons i would rather not mention…

that was till today…

over-reacting… a word owned by many, myself included.. expressed in actions and emotions be it on a superficial level or hidden deep inside, it is often viewed as ‘over the top’ by those who are unfamiliar. unfamiliar to the situation and reasons behind. but if u were to look through the eyes of the person, you would feel the frustration, excitement and all other mixed emotions oozing through your veins.

However, as time goes on, the things that i fret over in the past seem like a tiny spec in the present.. One has to understand how important or sensitive some issues are.. trying to avoid certain feelings, or hide it sometimes create a zone which one wishes not for others to tresspass.. This black and white line turns to grey exponentially with the tick of the clock- till one day i forget. till i take a step back and look beyond what i saw, did i really see the through picture.. at this point of time, i would allow others to come into my zone through the front door.

i so miss many things. time included.

pieces of today

i m writing this at 11.58pm.. i feel like writing bout a few things that happened, so, there are subtopics to this blog.. =)

1. manipulation of words..

it has come to my attention a while back of the power of words. when i had to write a formal letter a few months ago, my usage of words were of a totally different set compared to the words i use on a daily basis (including writing this blog).. words like ‘must’ and ‘need’ shows determination or strictness or desperateness or anything along that line.. ‘if’ and ‘can’ or ‘may’ on the other hand suggest uncertainties or seeking permission.. earlier today, i read an email sent by a really good friend of mine to somebody of status to ask for help.. in her efforts to show how urgent the issue was to her, she typed the following (or somewhere in between, i dont remember what you wrote word for word.. sorry miss-you-know-who =)) “This may have a negative impact on my final exams.” which brilliantly had astounding effects coz that person replied fairly soon in comparison to an email she sent a while back.

another incident today, which highlights the manipulations of words was when i was conversing with a friend. we were talking about coke, and somehow or another ended up talking about alcohol (only for a minute or so). He expressed his opinion by saying “people drink alcohol not for its taste but for its sensation. alcohol gives people a sense of relaxation.” this may sound harmless on one end.. but the moment he said that, it triggered my danger alarm..my mind tried to comprehend that sentence, and found it impossible.. relaxation in my terms would be associated with ibadah, family or sleeping (my friends are too hyper to be called a source of relaxation; its a compliment u guys!).. hence, how could alcohol be equaled to relaxation. this was a ‘math’ problem which had the wrong solutions.. ‘alcohol is a form of relaxation’ sounds harmless until u actually think of it..this is what i call the power of words… how the word ‘relaxation’ if associated to ‘alcohol’ may blur someone’s vision for a second… that left me a bit freaked out of the danger that words can kill!!…

2. stupid

today, i did something stupid.. thats what i would call it.. and dont worry mama, it has nothing to do with drugs, alcohol and sex.. i promise.. (haha..).. just a reminder to myself, my safety is of extremely high importance.

3. unhealthy

its been a really long time since the last time i ate hungry jacks.. i was hungry at uni, so i opted to eat at this burger-king like fast food place (the only place that was opend at 9.30pm)… almost immediately afterwards, i felt this feeling of puking.. my stomach went into a tantrum, sort of.. my teeth felt kinda greasy.. i felt unhealthy coz i swallowed something unhealthy.. errrrrr….and consequently, the following hour of my study dwindled in productivity.. oh dear, i’ll just have to find another source of food to eat instead, or stay hungry (lapa) for awhile longer if i can stand it…

btw, sorry to those hungry jack fans out there..

now, i am ready for bed i guess… planning to study sumore tomorrow!!! “yeehaaa”!!! (my favourite word for today..=))..
